What is Sarsaparilla and Why is it so Sweet?

What is Sarsaparilla and Why is it so Sweet?

Sarsaparilla is a climbing vine that grows deep in the rainforests of South America, the Caribbean, and other areas with rainforests. For centuries the indigenous people of these areas have used the root as a natural medicine to combat different health ailments.

Why is Sarsaparilla used as natural medicine?

Arthritis: Sarsaparilla is a potent anti-inflammatory that treats joint conditions and gout.

Psoriasis: Sarsaparilla root has been used for decades to treat psoriasis. Researchers believe that a compound in the root sarsaparilla, binds to the endotoxin that causes skin lesions and can purge them from the body.

The original Sarsaparilla or ‘sars’ drink originated in the 1800s. Served in bars, it was used as a home remedy. The beverage however was sassafras and not sarsaparilla. It tasted like root beer and offered no health benefits. While some sarsaparilla drinks can be tasty, the problem with these drinks is that they are made with artificial flavours, artificial colouring and very high in sugar. The average sarsaparilla soda has about 43g of sugar!

If you want to experience the benefits of sarsaparilla, you can, without all the sugar. Natural Remedy’s Sarsaparilla Tonic is made in Australia with no added sugar, no artificial flavours or colours and sweetened with brown Pears - natural sweetness without the need for added sugar or food colouring.

Is natural sugar better for you?

Yes, minimally processed or natural sugars may be a healthier option. Sweeteners like honey or maple syrup contain small amounts of nutrients and antioxidants that highly processed sugars, such as white sugar, do not. However, sugar is still sugar, and your body converts all types of sugar into energy, so moderation is still important.

How To Drink Sarsaparilla

Our Sarsaparilla Tonic is combined with licorice to soothe tired adrenals and ginseng for mental stamina. You can mix it with your favourite beverage like soda water or coffee to get the benefits sarsaparilla offers without all the added sugar.

If you are craving something sweet, add ice cream to your drink to make a Sarsaparilla Spider! Our Sarsaparilla Tonic makes an anti-aging supplement to keep you focused and keeps you energised throughout the day. Cheers!
