What are Oxalates?

Oxalate or oxalic acid is in leafy greens and other plants. Aside from leafy greens, it's in nuts, seeds, fruits, and cocoa. Generally, the benefits of these foods outweigh the risk of these plant-based foods for most people, but there may be reasons why you may want to cut down on oxalic acid.

What Is An Oxalate?

Oxalic is an organic acid found in plants and organically in the body. It usually binds to minerals in plants to form oxalate.

Oxalate is an antinutrient. An antinutrient may interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in foods. When you consume Oxalates, they can bind to minerals in the body like iron and calcium. This process can happen in the urinary tract, kidneys, or colon.

Oxalates are cleansed from the body when you use the bathroom. Some individuals are more sensitive to oxalic acids and can experience health problems including, kidney stones.

One of the concerns with oxalates is they can bind to minerals in your stomach and thus hinder the absorption of the mineral. Oxalates do not fuse with all minerals, which is why a well-balanced diet is crucial.
